Last week VIN Chip supported specialist training for officers from West Mercia Police, providing in-depth knowledge and hands-on skills for the accurate identification of leisure vehicles.

The course focused on leisure vehicle identification (ID) and was delivered by Vince Wise, Director – Leisure Vehicle & Holiday Parks Security at the National Caravan Council, alongside Martyn Leigh, Leisure Vehicle Officer at the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS) .

The day began with classroom-based learning at Telford Police Station, where officers were introduced to the key principles of identifying caravans, motorhomes and related leisure vehicles. This included guidance on vehicle identification numbers, construction features, and the common indicators used when assessing potentially stolen or tampered vehicles.

The training then moved to a practical session at Salop Leisure in Shrewsbury. Here officers were able to carry out hands-on examinations of real vehicles, applying the techniques discussed in the classroom to live scenarios.

Special thanks go to Mike Harris, Joint Managing Director of Salop Leisure, for generously providing access to the company’s facilities. Salop Leisure operates a CaSSOA Gold-rated storage facility for caravans and motorhomes alongside its award-winning dealership, making it an ideal environment for practical training.

Following the session, Graham Donaldson, Rural and Business Crime Officer and Wildlife Crime Coordinator at West Mercia Police, commented:

“Thank you, those that attended were impressed with the training, just the right amount of classroom input and outdoor practical sessions. I’m confident the training will be put to good use.”

Training initiatives like this help ensure officers have the skills required to identify vehicles correctly, detect tampering, and support investigations into vehicle theft and organised crime.
