IMI Accredited Motor Vehicle Identification Programme

The IMI Accredited Motor Vehicle Identification Programme is an intensive 3-day course designed to provide participants with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in vehicle identification. This course offers detailed insights into manufacturer vehicle marking systems, techniques used for identity manipulation, and methods for detecting these issues during investigations, stop checks and planned operations. It will also enable students to present their findings in an evidential statement / report, for production at court at a later date.

This course is ideal for law enforcement, senior claims assessors and vehicle examiners looking to enhance their expertise in motor vehicle identification.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an IMI Quality Assured Award.

Understanding Vehicle Theft

Gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature, scope, and trends in vehicle theft, including the methods used by criminals and the impact on victims and society.

DVLA Registration System Knowledge:

Develop a working knowledge of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) registration system, including how to access and interpret vehicle registration data.

Vehicle Chassis Number Interpretation

Learn how to accurately interpret and analyse vehicle chassis numbers, understanding their significance and what they reveal about a vehicle's identity and history.

Using the Police National Computer (PNC)

To have a working knowledge of PNC's Vehicle Online Descriptive Searching (VODS) feature as an effective investigative tool for identifying potential stolen vehicles.

Gain insight into the concept of 'PNC Corruption,' understanding how data can be manipulated . To learn how to use supporting information to come to a safe conclusion on what can be relied on and what cannot.

Learn to effectively use and understand open-source databases related to vehicles, enhancing your ability to gather information from multiple sources during investigations.

Understand the various methods of vehicle 'ringing,' including both physical alterations and fraudulent paperwork, and learn how to identify these illegal practices.

Course Format

The course runs over 3 days and includes a balanced mix of theory and practical sessions. Students are required to complete a workbook throughout the course and will sit a multiple-choice examination at the end to assess their understanding and knowledge.

Trainer Vince Wise

About the trainer - Vince Wise

Vince Wise is an ex-Detective with over 30 years of policing experience with the Metropolitan and Hampshire Police. He served in the Force Stolen Vehicle Squad as an Investigator and Intelligence Development Officer, later establishing the Force Vehicle Desk within the Force Intelligence Bureau. His work in tackling organised crime related to stolen vehicle exports led to a secondment to AVCIS at the Port of Southampton. Since leaving the police in 2012, Vince has continued his work in vehicle identification and recovery on both national and international levels. In 2013, he authored the Vehicle Identification course, which achieved IMI Quality Assured Programme status.
